The Shift from Tools to Autonomous Software
Traditional SaaS gives users tools — interfaces they use to accomplish tasks. The next generation gives users outcomes — software that accomplishes tasks autonomously. This is not an incremental improvement. It's a fundamental shift in what software is and how it creates value.
The New SaaS Architecture: Agentic Layers
Future SaaS products will have three layers:
- Automation layer: Handles repetitive, well-defined tasks without human input (already here — Zapier, Make)
- Agent layer: Handles complex, multi-step tasks with judgment and tool use (emerging now — Devin, Cognition, Lindy)
- Strategic layer: Human + AI collaboration on high-judgment decisions (the irreducible human role)
Pricing Will Change Fundamentally
Per-seat pricing makes no sense when AI agents can do the work of 10 employees. The pricing models that win in the agentic era: outcome-based ($X per lead generated, per contract signed, per invoice processed), usage-based ($ per agent task completed), and value-based (% of documented savings or revenue generated).
Early movers in outcome-based pricing: Klarity (charges per contract reviewed), Harvey (per legal document), Regie.ai (per meeting booked). Watch these companies — they're 3–5 years ahead of the market in pricing model.
The User Interface is Disappearing
If software can accomplish tasks autonomously, many SaaS interfaces become less necessary. The shift: from "dashboard where you click buttons" to "natural language instruction + approval workflow." The primary interaction becomes: give agent an objective → agent plans and executes → human reviews and approves.
What to Build for 2026–2030
- Vertical AI agents: Deep domain expertise in specific industries (legal, finance, healthcare, real estate)
- Workflow orchestration: Connecting multiple AI capabilities into end-to-end business processes
- Evaluation and trust: Tools that help humans verify AI work quality
- Hybrid human-AI systems: Products that seamlessly blend human judgment and AI execution
